The Lionesses created history in English football by becoming the first senior English side to ever defend their European title.

The Lionesses’ back-to-back EURO win became the most watched TV moment of 2025 yet, with a peak audience of 12.2 million across all BBC platforms.
BBC One alone drew 11.6 million viewers, while the match was streamed 4.2 million times on iPlayer and BBC Sport.

The nation held its breath as Chloe Kelly stepped up to a penalty spot she knew well.
With many fans following the action on social media, Women’s EURO 2025 became UEFA’s most viewed and engaged with women’s tournament ever, racking up 20.7 million engagements and over half a billion views. More than 500,000 new followers joined UEFA’s social platforms during the tournament.

The UEFA Women’s EURO 2025 became the most well-attended Women’s European Championship in history, the tournament set a new record with a total attendance of 657,291.

The Lionesses’ success has been widely credited to the growing professionalism of the women’s game in England, driven by the Women’s Super League.
Reflecting that momentum, WSL clubs recently voted to expand the top tier from 12 to 14 teams from the 2025/26 season, with two teams earning automatic promotion and a playoff to decide the final spot.

No rest for the champions – they’ll return to the UK and go straight to Number 10 for a special reception hosted by Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner and Sports Minister Stephanie Peacock.
The celebrations will continue on Tuesday 29th July with a public victory event at St James’s Park and The Mall in London.

Could it also be third time lucky? As the Lionesses eye a third major trophy, the United Kingdom stands as the sole valid bidder to host the 2035 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland have submitted a joint expression of interest, making the UK the likely host nation.
