Liverpool FC have planned a major redevelopment of its Academy in Kirkby, including the construction of a full-size indoor pitch and new facilities to support youth development.

The club has confirmed that the existing main pitch will be covered with a dome connected to the current Academy building, providing an indoor training option for the first time. A new outdoor grass pitch with a stand for up to 500 spectators will also be created, forming the centrepiece for matches played at the site.

The redevelopment will include upgrades to medical and sports science facilities to further support younger age groups. Liverpool FC has stated that a planning application will be submitted, with the work scheduled for completion in 2028.

The project follows recent additions at the Academy, including cages for small-sided matches, a skills area, an athletic development area and a padbol court. The redevelopment comes during a period of increasing investment across English football academies, with clubs focusing on both infrastructure and player pathways to meet domestic and international competition demands.

Alex Inglethorpe, Academy director said, “The owners have embarked on a number of infrastructure projects in recent years with the redevelopment of the two stands at Anfield, building the AXA Training Centre to put us all on one site here at Kirkby, and giving Melwood a facelift for the women’s team to go there.

“We’ve always been patient as an academy, knowing where we sit in the order of things, but now it’s our turn and it’s really exciting.”
