The 2024 London Marathon generated more than £67m, setting a world record for a one-day fundraising event.
The iconic race’s online fundraising partner Enthuse revealed £27m has been raised on its online platform, while JustGiving has seen donations of £40m.
The total figure eclipses the previous high of £66.4m set by the 2019 edition of the London Marathon.
For this year, a record number of 53,000 participants completed the 26.2-mile race.
Chester Mojay-Sinclare, CEO of Enthuse, said, “What an incredible event and a brilliant day with such a huge amount raised for good causes.
“This is the third year we have been the official partner for the TCS London Marathon and it’s incredible to see the growth over that time – our fundraising total of £27 million for the event, so far, is more than 200 per cent higher than in our first year.
“It’s such a special day for the sector and we’re delighted for all the charities that will benefit from the public’s generosity. We’re already looking forward to the 2025 event.”
This year’s Manchester Marathon meanwhile, which also took place on Sunday 21st April, has delivered an economic spend of £29.2m for Greater Manchester, and included a record number of 32,000 participants.
The events raised more than £3.5m for charities including Alzheimers Charity, Cancer Research UK, British Heart Foundation and The Christie.
175,000 journeys were made across Manchester’s Metrolink trains on race day, up 20% on last year, marking the highest ever figure for a single day.
Andrew Smith, CEO of Manchester Marathon organiser Human Race, said, “A record 32,000 people signed up to take part in this year’s event, which shows what an inclusive and supportive city Manchester is.
“It’s so important that we can return the favour to the brilliant people of Manchester by generating income for local businesses and giving back to the community through our charitable partners and social initiatives.”
