As hosts of the 2012 Olympics, London could be added to the Golden League athletics series by athletics governing body IAAF.

The Golden League, a series of athletics events, currently offers a $1m jackpot to be shared by athletes who win their event at every city.

Already scheduled to be held in six locations this year – Berlin, Oslo, Rome, Paris, Zurich and Brussels – the IAAF is looking to expand it to 12 cities, which could include London.

The governing body spokesman Nick Davies claimed London was a strong candidate because of its ‘big budgets and good sponsors’.

An IAAF council meeting in Berlin will be responsible for making the decision in March when they will discuss how much progress has been made with sponsorship deals and prospective hosts will be asked to submit tenders.

While Kenyan 800 metres Olympic champion Pamela Jelimo won the $1m Golden League jackpot last year, Davies has allegedly claimed that the rules for winning the jackpot would be changed if the series were to be expanded to additional cities.
