The new floodlights at the historic Lord’s cricket ground have been unveiled increasing the options opening to rights holder the MCC regarding day-night games.
The four custom-designed floodlights have been installed in time for the ICC World Twenty20 in June and feature state-of-the-art telescopic functionality.
Designed by specialists Abacus Lighting, the masts can be extended to 48 metres when in use and retracted to just over 29 metres when not in use.
With full touch-screen operation, the lights take just 20 minutes to be fully extended for use from switch-on and provide a lighting level of 2,200 lux inside the ground.
The head frame design of each floodlight mounts 100 Challenger 3 floodlights and cowls, with each 2kw day-light lamp producing 220,000 lumens to meet the lux standards necessary for HDTV broadcast.
The innovative design has been developed to fit aesthetically within the ground with the curved design of the head frames in keeping with the modernist lines of the Lord’s Media Centre.
