The UK Government has announced a 10% increase in funding for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.

Revealing the UK’s Autumn Budget for 2024, Chancellor Rachel Reeves pledged £344m in total funding over the upcoming four-year cycle in the buildup to the Games, equating to £86m per year.

The Treasury says it will provide an additional £9m annually, in order to support athletes across the country prepare for Los Angeles 2028.

Team GB secured 14 gold medals last summer in Paris.

The uptick in investment comes after this summer’s Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games, during which Great Britain brought home 65 Olympic medals, as well as 124 Paralympic medals, which saw the team finish second in the overall table.

The funding also covers athletes preparing for the Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic Games.

According to a recent study published by the British Elite Athlete Association (BEAA), 64% of the 189 athletes who took part in the survey would consider ending their careers, if the financial support they received would not improve.

“The money invested into Olympic and Paralympic sport allows world class support to be provided to British athletes,” said Sally Munday, CEO of UK Sport.

“This includes enabling investment into some of the best coaches, sports science and medicine in the world and contributes towards costs of training environments, camps, travel, accommodation, and entry into international competitions outside of the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

“It also enables over 1000 athletes across 50 sports to receive grants to contribute to their living costs.”
