Newcastle United has agreed a new two-year sponsorship deal with Virgin Money to become the club’s new shirt sponsor, believed to be worth as much as £20m.

The deal follows weeks of negotiations between the football club and Virgin, after Sir Richard Branson agreed to buy out the Newcastle-based bank, Northern Rock.

According to media reports, the terms were concluded late on Tuesday night, which led to a late alteration to the first team’s shirts in order to present the Virgin Money logo for last night’s match with Manchester United.

Northern Rock had sponsored the club for eight seasons, with the contract due to run out at the end of the season – however the bank was taken over by Virgin on 1st January.

Virgin has now taken on the terms of Northern Rock’s existing deal, and extended the contract for a further two years.

Virgin has also offered the first 10,000 supporters who bring their shirts to the club shop a free replacement logo to cover the old Northern Rock one.

Newcastle debuted the new sponsor logo in last night’s 3-0 victory over title contenders Manchester United, thanks to goals from top-scorer Demba Ba, Yohan Cabaye, and an own goal from United’s defender Phil Jones.
