Manchester City have opened a sensory room at the Etihad Stadium, creating a space for fans with sensory processing issues to attend matches.

The club says the new room in the stadium offers the fans and their families a full and unobstructed view of the pitch, with optional seating inside the arena proper to give users the option of experiencing the matchday crowd if they so wish.

A trial period was run during the Premier League champions’ first four home matches of the season, when the club invited families who have sensory processing issues to try the space before opening fully.

City also say that families who are interested in using the sensory room on matchdays can visit ahead of time to assess its suitability for their own situation.

Danny Wilson, Operations Director, Manchester City said: “After a period of successful trials we are delighted to open a sensory room at the Etihad Stadium. The positive feedback we received means we know that this is a space which will help those with sensory processing issues enjoy their experience without the sometimes-overwhelming sounds, sights and crowds of a usual matchday.

“We hope that the offer of this quiet space within the stadium will encourage those who might not usually attend a game to do so, knowing that the club will be with them every step of the way to ensure they can be a part of the matchday experience.”

Manchester City’s home game with Aston Villa on 26th October will see the official matchday opening of the room to fans.

In 2017, fellow Premier League side Watford opened a sensory room, while League One’s Sunderland and Middlesbrough of the Championship also have a space for supporters with sensory processing issues in their stadiums.
