According to a report by The Guardian, Premier League giants Manchester United are considering three options for upgrading the capacity inside Old Trafford from 74,000 to 80,000.

Tearing down the iconic Old Trafford stadium is one of Manchester United’s options for increasing its stadium’s capacity.

The Guardian report suggests that an expansion of the South Stand is a possible route the club is considering, however, it would face logistical issues due to the railway line running behind the ground. Smaller renovations of all four of the current stands is another option. It is thought that demolishing the whole existing structure is the ‘least likely’ option.

The club is also considering the possibility of building a new academy stadium next to the main ground, similar to what local rivals, Manchester City, built on its Etihad Campus. United own a vast amount of land around Old Trafford that makes this option feasible.

The Red Devils trails behind its Premier League rivals in terms of stadium development and matchday facilities. The rest of the Premier League’s ‘big six’ have all either upgraded their stadiums or moved into new ones since the Glazer family acquired the club in 2005, making this a crucial time to invest in the infrastructure.

Manchester United’s chief operating officer, Collette Roche, spoke about potential stadium redevelopment at a recent fan’s forum, “We have been assessing the capabilities of globally-leading consultants who want to help us develop a masterplan for the modernisation of Old Trafford, with the ultimate aim of improving the matchday experience for fans.”
