Manchester United has announced a revenue increase to £175m in the last six months of 2011 – an improvement of £18.5m for the same period the year before – after releasing its latest financial figures.

The Barclays Premier League club also revealed that debt stood at £439m at the end of 2011, less than the £508m reported 12 months previously.

The decrease in the club’s debt comes after United bought back some of the bonds that were sold as part of a £500m refinancing exercise at the start of 2010.

However, total operating costs have risen from £96.9m to £110.8m – and net player capital expenditure – up from £11.7m to £47.9m – both rose with the signings of David de Gea, Ashley Young and Phil Jones.

The club has experienced increases in matchday revenue – up from £52.4m to £54.5m, media revenue – up from £53.7m to £60.9m, and commercial revenue, which has risen to £58.6m from £50.4m.

The team currently sit in second to local rivals Manchester City in the Premier League, and are also competing in the Europa League.

However, without the revenue streams garnered from competing in the Champions League, the club is expected to see a decline in income over the next half-year.
