Manchester City’s new owner Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed al Nahyan has topped the Rich List as the wealthiest man in football, bumping Chelsea’s Roman Abramovich down to third place.
Ranked in terms of his amount of private wealth in FourFour Two magazine’s annual Rich List, the Abu Dhabi native is estimated to be worth £15bn. He took over Man City in September and is worth more than twice the Russian Chelsea owner, who claimed the number-one spot on the list last year.
Abramovich’s worth , like many of the owners on the list, has been significantly hit by the impact of the economic recession with his personal wealth dwindling to £7bn.
Premier League bosses of Manchester Utd and Arsenal also made the list, with Alex Ferguson at number 78, worth £22m, and Arsene Wenger at 92 with £14m.
A few new sports moguls also made the list. The number two spot was claimed by Indian-born Lakshmi Mittal, who invested in the F1 magnate’s Coca-Cola Championship side Queen’s Park Rangers and is estimated to be worth £12.5bn.
England manager Fabio Capello, is worth £25m, tied for 73rd, with a £6m-a-year contract and a private art collection said to be worth £10m.
From the players’ perspective, new AC Milan recruit David Beckham retains his spot at the top of the list – his £125m wealth dwarfing that of the next man on the list, Michael Owen who is worth £40m.
