Manchester United have appointed architecture firm Foster + Partners to develop a masterplan for the regeneration of the Old Trafford District.

The London-based company will focus area surrounding the Theatre of Dreams rather than the stadium itself, as United double down on their plans to establish a ‘world class football destination’.

The Premier League club are aiming to revamp the area around the 74,310-seat venue, featuring a range of mixed-use developments, which will serve as an attractive destination for visitors.

Foster + Partners will create a masterplan for the area surrounding the iconic stadium.

Foster + Partners will engage with fans, community members, and local authorities, in the development of the company’s plan.

The firm will also collaborate with the Old Trafford Regeneration Task Force, which was set up in March to evaluate options for the redevelopment of the club’s stadium.

Last week, United launched a fan survey, inviting supporters to offer their views on Old Trafford’s redevelopment.

Earlier this month, the Red Devils struck a strategic alliance with local authorities the the Trafford Council and Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GCMA) to explore ways in which the regeneration of Old Trafford could benefit the Trafford Wharfside community.

The reimagination of Old Trafford has been central to Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s ambitions for United since his arrival at the club in February, amid his vision for a world-class venue.

The part owner reportedly favours the construction of a new 100,000 seat stadium, which could cost between £2bn and £3bn.

Lord Foster, Founder and Executive Chairman of Foster + Partners, said, “As a proud Mancunian, I am passionate about the chance to rebuild on Manchester’s great industrial heritage, creating a vibrant new mixed-use community, served by highly sustainable and improved transport links, providing homes and jobs for the local community, all catalysed by a world-class stadium for the world’s most famous football team – Manchester United.”

Collette Roche, Chief Operating Officer at Manchester United, added, “We have a clear vision to transform and revitalise the club-owned land around Old Trafford and we know that Foster + Partners is the best partner to help us develop the plans.

“This is an area of Greater Manchester ready for major new investment so that it can thrive once more, and we are determined to help deliver those outcomes.

“We want this area to become a true destination, that not only provides an unbeatable matchday experience for our fans, but also supports other forms of entertainment, leisure, business and residential facilities surrounding a world-class stadium.”
