Markel International, the specialist insurer, has signed a sponsorship deal with batsman Sam Robson, who recently began his England career in the Sri Lankan Test at Lord’s.

Robson, 24, is Sydney born and raised but as an English passport holder and London-native was signed by Middlesex County Cricket Club where he joined in 2008.

In 2012, on the first day of a three-day match against Durham MCC University, Sam made cricket history by becoming the first batsman to score a first-class hundred in England in the month of March. Prior to this Sam played for Australia’s under 19s squad.

The signing is the latest in a run of sponsorship deals in which Markel has picked up rising sports stars, including flat jockey William Buick, who now has 26 Group One victories to his name, Lucy Alexander, who last year became the first female jump jockey to win the Conditional Jockeys’ Championship and Sam Thomas, jump jockey and 2008 Grand National winner.

As part of the agreement, Markel will also sponsor two under 19 England players, managed by Paragon Sports Management group, Sam’s agent.

Commenting on the deal, Sam said: ‘With my selection for the England squad this is an exciting time in my career. I am thrilled that Markel is supporting me and look forward to representing the company both on and off the pitch.’

William Stovin, president and chief operating officer of Markel International, commented: ‘We are delighted to be able to support one of the most promising of England’s up and coming batsmen and very pleased that that he’s been called up for the England squad for the Sri Lankan Test. We wish him the best of luck.’
