The R&A has appointed Martin Slumbers as its new chief executive from next year, who will replace the retiring Peter Dawson in one of the most senior positions in world golf.
Slumbers, who will also become secretary of The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews, will take up the role in October next year when Dawson officially steps down,
However, the Deutsche Bank executive will initially join the organisation as chief executive designate in March for a transition period.
Dawson confirmed his plan to retire in 2015 earlier this year after 16 years at the R&A.
Slumbers commented: ‘The R&A is one of the most influential bodies in world sport and I am delighted to be taking up this position.’
‘Golf has always been close to my heart and I am very much looking forward to living and working in St Andrews. I am honoured to be appointed to lead The R&A and to serve such an historic and prestigious club.’
Professor Wilson Sibbett, the chairman of The R&A, added: ‘I would like to congratulate Martin on his appointment. He has enjoyed a long and successful career and will bring a great deal of experience to the position.’
‘He has a passion for golf and is absolutely committed to the work of The R&A in governing the game, running The Open and supporting development initiatives around the world.’
The R&A was in the news last month after voting to allow women members to join for the first time in its 260-year history.
2,400 global members were entitled to vote, with more than three-quarters taking part in the historic ballot – of those, 85% were in favour of change.
