The Masters Snooker tournament will move away from Wembley from the start of next season, across London to Alexandra Palace.

The event has been held at Wembley since 1979 – at the since-demolished Conference Centre, and since 2007, at the Wembley Arena.

The new venue Alexandra Palace already hosts the PDC World Darts Championship.

World Snooker chairman Barry Hearn said: ‘Alexandra Palace is one of the iconic buildings in London. I’ve staged boxing matches there and the World Darts Championship which has been an enormous success’.

‘We have the ability to build within this arena an atmospheric staging of a major event’.

The newly located Masters will run from 15th to 22nd January.

The UK Championship will also be moved from Telford to York’s Barbican Centre.

Meanwhile, one event staying put for the near future is the World Championship at The Crucible in Sheffield, with Hearn saying he would happily commit to a further deal – with the current contract already covering the next four years.

Hearn added: ‘This is my cathedral of dreams. I love this place. I go through the curtain, close my eyes, and I’m in a time warp’.

‘We’re tied in for the next four years to this place and I really wouldn’t care if it was 40’.
