The first professional women’s rugby league in the United States, Women’s Elite Rugby (WER), has revealed the identities of its six inaugural teams, created in collaboration with London-based creative agency MATTA.
The league, which will begin its first season in March, has worked with MATTA to develop the names and crests of its teams, drawing inspiration from their home cities and incorporating input from local players and supporters.
The teams are Bay Breakers, Boston Banshees, Chicago Tempest, Denver Onyx, New York Exiles, and Twin Cities (TC) Gemini.
MATTA has previously worked on women’s rugby branding, including the creation of the Red Roses identity for England Rugby in 2016.
The launch of WER comes as interest in women’s rugby continues to grow globally, with the 2025 Women’s Rugby World Cup in England expected to set new attendance records.
Flo Williams, Director of Women’s Sport at MATTA said, “Drawing on a decade of experience shaping women’s rugby in the UK, we’re proud to have created bold, US-aligned brands that will inspire the next generation of rugby players and fans globally.”
