Scottish Football Association president John McBeth has surprisingly beaten his
FA counterpart Geoff Thompson to be named the UK’s next vice-president of global
governing body FIFA.
McBeth, who also beat Irish FA president Jim Boyce and Peter Rees, the
president of the Football Association of Wales to the post, will succeed his
fellow Scotsman David Will when he retires from the post in May after 17 years.
To the concern of some FIFA members, most noticeably influential vice
president Jack Warner, the UK has a permanent seat for a vice president on
FIFA’s high ranking executive commitee.
Thompson had been odds on to claim the seat, earlier today stating: ‘England
have not had it for 50 years and especially in recent years the FA have put a
tremendous amount of effort and resources into our international relations
programme with other associations.’
