EA Sports has named Rory McIlroy as the cover athlete and namesake of its golf franchise, replacing long-standing ambassador Tiger Woods and officially making the Northern Irishman the new face of Rory McIlroy PGA Tour
Woods has been the face of EA Sports’s PGA Tour game since 1998 but he is now being succeeded by the 25-year-old, ahead of the game’s release in June 2015.
Woods’ contract with the distributor expired in 2013, while the pair shared the cover in 2011.
The world number one commented: “I’m very proud and humbled to see my face and name on EA Sports Rory McIlroy PGA Tour.
“This is a great honor, and something I couldn’t even dream of growing up playing the sport. I really hope people enjoy the game and I’m very glad I can be a part of it.”
Brent Nielsen, executive producer of EA Sports Rory McIlroy PGA Tour, added: “The new engine drastically improves all facets of the game, from core gameplay to opportunities for brand new modes and features. We’re looking forward to sharing a lot of great news with our fans throughout the rest of the spring.”
