British Athletics has announced a new partnership with MG Motor, who becomes the Official Automotive Partner of the organisation, in a deal set to support the sport in the approach to the 2016 Rio Games and the 2017 London IAAF and IPC World Championships.

As part of the agreement the British brand – designed and engineered at the 69 acre site at Longbridge, Birmingham – will provide a fleet of cars in support of the World Class Performance programme.

The deal, described as ‘lucrative’ by British Athletics, follows a number of recent commercial announcements including Sainsbury’s, who extended its long-term partnership with the governing body earlier this month.

British Athletics CEO Niels de Vos said of the deal: ‘We are thrilled and excited to be able to announce this partnership. MG is an iconic British brand representing innovation, speed and performance and therefore is the perfect fit for British Athletics in one of the most exciting times for the sport.’

The announcement follows record breaking global sales for MG in 2013, with sales increasing significantly in the UK since the launch of the MG3 supermini in September last year.
