Satellite navigation technology firm Garmin has struck a deal with Middlesbrough
to become the FA Premier League club’s new shirt sponsor.
Garmin has signed a one-year deal with Middlesbrough to see its brand logo
replace gambling brand 888.com on the club’s home and away shirts.
As part of the sponsorship deal, the technology firm will also provide all
the Middlesbrough players and coaches with its Forerunner wristwatches, which
measure heart rate, running speed and the distance covered during training.
The data collected from the devices will be uploaded to the Middlesbrough FC
website, allowing fans to track players’ performance and coaches to assess
individual team mates’ endurance.
The deal with Garmin, which designs and makes in-car sat-nav devices and
equipment for the marine and aviation sectors, is initially for 12 months, but
Middlesbrough said it was already in discussions about extending the sponsorship
into a second year.
