Scottish golfer Colin Montgomerie is lobbying for the Ryder Cup to be extended from three to four days of competition.

Speaking at the Wales Open staged at Celtic Manor, home of the Ryder Cup in 2010, Montgomerie stated that an extension of the competition would allow for less predictable weather and longer courses.

He said: ‘To get everything done in three days isn’t necessary. We seem to be rushing around and for what reason? It’s almost got to that stage where two rounds a day over three days is just a rush.’

Speaking about the Celtic Manor course as a Ryder Cup venue, he added: ‘There is a river here and the temperature between rivers and land cause fog. We risked it in Ireland where we were close to a delay and we just got away with it. There could be delays here and we pray him upstairs is good to us.

‘To get people around twice in places that are this vast and this large is getting harder and it would make sense to play it over four days. But I think everyone would benefit from a longer tournament, advertisers, supporters and the media so it should be possibility.’
