Morocco has formally announced it will bid to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup, challenging a joint bid from the United States, Canada and Mexico.
The Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) will attempt the bidding process for the tournament for the fifth time, following efforts for the 1994, 1998, 2006 and 2010 edition.
The bid has backing from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and if successful, Morocco would become the second African nation to host a World Cup, after South Africa staged the event in 2010.
The FRMF is up against a joint bid from the United States, Canada and Mexico, which launched in April, stating the countries already had the infrastructure required.
Morocco confirmed its intention to enter just hours before the FIFA deadline, which was recognised by the Leaders of United Bid, as the North American effort is known.
The bids now have until March 2018 to formally submit their proposals to FIFA for consideration. A decision on whether the bids will be accepted will be made at next June’s FIFA Congress.
