Morrisons has appointed M&C Saatchi Sport & Entertainment to deliver the supermarket chain’s communications strategy to promote its newly signed sponsorship of England’s bid to host the World Cup in 2018 or 2022.
Following the successful delivery of the launch event for the sponsorship, the agency has been briefed by Morrisons to deliver the full range of communications activities around the partnership including all PR and media relations initiatives for the duration of the sponsorship contract.
In a reported £1m deal, Morrisons became the third sponsor of the bid last week after telecommunications brand BT and tax and advisory services firm PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP announced their backing.
England is one of eight competitors bidding to host the 2018 tournament and one of 10 bidding to host the 2022 tournament. The decision for both tournaments will be announced in Zurich in December 2010.
Rumours suggest that an airline category will be announced as the fourth sponsor in the coming months as England’s bid begins to gather strong commercial backing.
Andy Anson, chief executive of England 2018, will be the interviewee at the inaugural Sport Industry Breakfast Club event on 16th March, only two months before the official bid document is due to be handed in to world governing body FIFA.
