Supermarket chain Morrisons has blasted FIFA over England’s failed World Cup bid and has instructed lawyers in Switzerland to examine whether compensation can be claimed.

Morrisons, an official partner of the England 2018 bid, has branded the voting process unfair and has called for FIFA to donate £1m to grass-roots football as compensation.

Morrisons chief executive Dalton Philips has written to FIFA president Sepp Blatter to suggest the bidding process was not fair.

Russia and Qatar won the rights to host the 2018 and 2022 World Cups at the vote on 2nd December at FIFA’s headquarters in Zurich.

Richard Taylor, director of corporate affairs and communications at Morrisons said: ‘As we think the decision-making process was unfair, we have instructed lawyers in Switzerland to examine our options under Swiss law.’

‘We hope FIFA will do the right thing and offer £1 million to be invested in grass-roots football,’ he added.

Morrisons became the third sponsor of the bid after telecommunications brand BT and tax and advisory services firm PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP in February.
