His Royal Highness Prince Harry and tennis great Tim Henman presented the Murray family with the Outstanding Contribution to Sport Award at the fifteenth edition of BT Sport Industry Awards on Thursday 28th April 2016.
The Murrays received one of the evening’s most prestigious accolades for their combined contribution and impact on tennis and wider sport participation.
On presenting the Award Tim Henman said: “They support each other, they care about each other, they coach each other and they push each other on. Their story is a living fable of the importance of parental and family support in our sporting landscape, their story has transformed British Tennis and they have placed our country at the heart of one of the greatest eras in tennis history.”
Judy and Jamie accepted the Award on the evening with Andy giving a video message saying: “It means a lot to me and my family, it’s the first Award I’ve ever been given alongside my family. I’m very proud of everything that my brother has achieved to date, and everything that my mum does for British tennis on a daily basis, this has been her life for a very long time and she does a great job.”
Upon receiving the award Judy Murray said: “It’s when we are at home and visiting local schools and clubs, that’s especially when I realize what they achieved. They were just two little boys from a little town that had no track record of tennis in our country and they went on to become to do what they did – that’s when it hits me what they’ve done. As well as being great athletes, they are great kids, great people and that’s what makes me the most proud.”
The Outstanding Contribution to Sport Award recognises and rewards the individual, team or organisation who has made the most impact in the world of sport. Previous winners include AP McCoy, Brian O’Driscoll, Sir Alex Ferguson, Team GB, Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson and David Beckham.
The presentation followed an official farewell led by Prince Harry, to the Invictus Games competitors who are heading off to compete in the second edition of Invictus Games in Orlando in just over a week’s time.
A total of 17 awards were presented during the course of the evening celebrating the best of the best of sport business, from marketing, PR, sponsorship, community investment, event, social media, digital and innovation.
