Spanish telecommunications and broadband provider, Telefónica, has signed countryman and world number one tennis player Rafael Nadal as its new global ambassador.
Nadal, who won his ninth French Open earlier this month and will attempt to add to his Wimbledon titles from next week, will be the company’s new global ambassador until 2020.
During the next six years he will represent both the brand as a whole and its numerous offshoots, such as Movistar, O2 and Vivo, in Spain, Germany, the UK and the Latin American countries where Telefónica operates.
Nadal is set to open a tennis academy in his native Majorca with the backing of Movistar, and will develop a host of technology, sports and support projects with the company.
As part of the deal, Movistar – Telefonica’s TV platform – will also be granted access and content related to Nadal’s career and in future Grand Slam tournaments.
Nadal will also accompany Telefónica in events for customers, employees and institutions, and is set to become the face of the company’s promotional campaigns.
