Building society Nationwide is reportedly set to axe its 11-year sponsorship of the England football team, following the team’s dismal performance in the World Cup.

A Nationwide spokeswoman said: ‘Nationwide’s sponsorship of the England team has been extremely successful over 11 seasons and has significantly raised the profile of our organisation. Our current sponsorship deal ends at the end of July and it is unlikely to be renewed.’

Nationwide replaced Green Flag as team sponsor in 1999 and is not looking to renew its current deal that runs out next month.

The Football Association will now face an uphill task as it looks to fill the £20m void left by Nationwide.

The FA has managed to secure a one-year extension with FA Cup sponsor E.ON recently but the search is now on to secure a new sponsor.

The FA hired design agency Bulletproof to create a new visual identity for Wembley Stadium – which it hopes will attract a new lead partner.
