The National Basketball Association (NBA) has extended its contract with Adam Silver that will see the current commissioner continue in his role for a further five years, through until the end of the 2023/24 season.

The extension of the contract was announced by NBA board of governor’s chairman and Toronto Raptors’ governor Larry Tanenbaum. No financial terms were disclosed.

Silver, who has held a variety of roles at the organisation since joining in 1992, has led the basketball league since taking over from David Stern in 2014, increasing revenue and expanding the business from an estimated $12bn to $60bn.

Silver also led discussions in 2016 with the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) to secure an agreement which saw the player salaries increase thanks to a $24.1bn, nine-year TV and media rights deal with Disney and Turner Sports.

The 2017/18 NBA season also saw the league set an attendance record for a fourth consecutive year, with 22.1 million fans attending games during the campaign. This year marked the first season that league attendance was at least 95% or more of arena capacity.

Also this season, Silver established the NBA 2K league – the first esports competition operated by one of North America’s four major leagues.
