The National Basketball Association (NBA) will host its first ever NBA Basketball Analytics Hackathon on 24th September in New York.

Teams accepted to the Hackathon will build basketball analytics tools and develop solutions to challenging and important problems in the field of basketball analytics, and present their work to a panel of judges and an audience of NBA League office and team personnel, media, invited guests and other competitors.

Open to undergraduate and graduate students, prizes will be awarded to the top three teams, including a tour of the NBA League office and a lunch with NBA staff. The event will provide a platform for the competitors to display their talent in front of decision makers in the field.

“We don’t want to reveal the question but it’s going to be around a hot topic in the league, the type of thing that the league office and teams would want to know,” NBA director of basketball analytics Jason Rosenfeld said to media.

“Our fans continue to show an increasing level of interest in data and analytics which provides a level of engagement,” Rosenfeld added. “We think that by bringing together some of the most talented young minds for a full day to build tools and develop solutions in the field of basketball analytics, we can continue to innovate, which is something that the NBA has embraced for a very long time.”

In the UK, Premier League side Manchester City hosted the first football hackathon last month.
