Lightfield display tech company, Magic Leap, has announced it is partnering with the National Basketball Association (NBA) to bring augmented reality to basketball.
The start-up launched its first pair of AR goggles this year, which users able to watch games through. The collaboration with NBA Digital and Turner will bring 3D viewing experiences via newly created companion app.
Fans will be able to watch the games with features that overlay data and screens all around their environment. It has been stated by the Magic Leap managing director however, that fans will not be able to watch live games, rather a curated list of archived NBA games and highlights.

It is expected that Magic Leap will be shipping later this year, with the company also showing a glimpse of what watching sports on multiple screens looks like earlier this year.
“At the end of the day, it’s about storytelling, and it’s about bringing those experiences that we have all had as sports fans when we’re physically in arenas, and working with technology to try to replicate that experience,” said NBA commissioner Adam Silver at a Recode conference. “And while we’ve made a lot of progress over the years, we’ve never quite found a way to take that emotional experience that you have at being at a game and found a way to scale it and translate it through technology, and that’s where we see the opportunity with Magic Leap.”
