A Formula One race will take place in front of the Manhattan skyline from 2013, with a street-circuit in New Jersey set to be added to the calendar.
The race will be the second American circuit on the calendar, with one set to be added in Texas next year. According to the governor of New Jersey, Chris Christie, the course will be 3.2 miles long and is expected to attract 100,000 spectators.
Its effect on the rest of what is becoming a crowded Formula One calendar remains to be seen. With Grands Prix in countries such as India, China, Russia and Korea either added in recent years or soon to be part of the schedule, questions have been raised over some of the more traditional but less profitable races in western Europe.
In September, meanwhile, there was controversy when the 2012 calendar was published by the FIA, apparently without being signed off by the teams.
Both US races will, like every other race on the calendar, be screened in the UK by Sky Sports, which will show every Grand Prix from next year in a new rights-sharing agreement with the BBC.
