Formula One’s commercial rights-holder Bernie Ecclestone has confirmed that the inaugural Grand Prix of America in New Jersey will be postponed until 2014 after preparations fell behind schedule.

The race, which was set to take place alongside the Hudson River, with the New York skyline as a backdrop, had been scheduled in for 16th June. However doubts had been raised over the event in recent months after facing difficulties including the resignation of president Tom Cotter in August who had only been in the role since January.

Ecclestone told Reuters: ‘They’ve run out of time…there are all sorts of things and they didn’t think it all through. They’ve had a wake-up call but the wake-up call came too late.’

Race promoter Leo Hindrey Jr. stated that they remained 100% committed to the Grand Prix of America, ‘just not as soon as we hoped and expected.’

Organisers also admitted that they required additional time for constructing the riverfront facilities.

The New Jersey race was set to become one of two US races during next season, joining the United States Grand Prix, which returns in November in Austin, Texas.
