Beijing-based company Reignwood Investments has purchased the home to the annual BMW PGA Championship, Wentworth golf club, in a reported £135 million move from restaurant entrepreneur Richard Caring.
According to media reports, multiple offers have been made to Caring during his ten-year tenure as owner but held out for what has been described as ‘the right offer’.
Caring, owner of the Ivy restaurant and Annabel’s nightclub in London, commented: ‘I have always looked for an owner with integrity, an understanding of the special place it holds in so many people’s hearts; an owner who wants to develop the club ever further, improving on what is already a masterpiece.’
The Surrey-based club, for which Caring paid an initial £130 million back in 2004, is home to the headquarters of the European Tour, as well as three courses: the West, East and Edinburgh.
Dr Chanchai Ruayrungruang, the founder of Reignwood Investments, added: ‘Wentworth is a key strategic acquisition for our rapidly growing luxury lifestyle division. Reignwood has a long history in golf development and a profound respect for excellence.’
The move sees Wentworth become the latest famous British golf course to come under foreign ownership, after Donald Trump purchased Turnberry golf club for a reported £36 million earlier this year.
