Following the tragic events in Christchurch this week, the Rugby World Cup organising committee has assured the country that no matches will be moved from the New Zealand shores.
Tuesday’s earthquake measured 6.3 on the Richter scale, ripping through the city of Christchurch.
There was no guarantee that the seven Rugby World Cup matches scheduled for the city would not be relocated following the deadly quake.
Martin Snedden, Rugby New Zealand 2011 chief executive, said: ‘It is too early to talk in any detail about implications for the tournament in Christchurch and any assessment by us must wait while the rescue efforts take priority’.
According to media reports, organisers were keen to stress that no matches would be moved to Australia.
Christchurch was due to host five group matches and two quarterfinals during the World Cup, which runs from 9th September to 23rd October.
Robbie Deans, a former All Black, said of the matter: ‘It’s hard to know – it doesn’t warrant thinking about at the moment, it’s not a priority’.
