The NFL and Amazon Web Services (AWS) have announced that the pair are working together in a bid to reduce the number of head injuries in American football.

A new partnership between the pair will create the “Digital Athlete” platform, which involved a computer simulation model of an NFL player that combines numerous data sources to help the NFL test an infinite number of scenarios that can take place on the pitch, without risking the safety of athletes.

Through the simulations, the NFL hopes to create a better understanding of how to treat and rehabilitate injuries for the moment, eventually going on to predict and even prevent injuries in the future.

The programme aims to detect and understand the underlying forces that cause concussions initially, with the same techniques then extended to reduce a wider range of injuries once they have been developed.

Since 2017, the pair have been working together on the NFL’s Next Gen Stats programme, providing real-time location, speed and acceleration data for every player on the pitch, and a new collaboration expands that partnership.
