The National Football League (NFL) has announced it is producing its first original virtual reality (VR) series, launching on YouTube and Google’s Daydream headset later this month.
The nine-part series, produced by NFL Films, will offer a 360-degree perspective of life in and around the NFL, covering players, coaches, executives, cheerleaders and fans.
Each episode is around five to ten minutes, marking the first episodic VR sports programme and will centre on how the fans of Football Nation prepare for gameday.
Currently in production using Google’s Jump 360-degree camera system, the first episode allows viewers to spend a week with the Philadelphia Eagles’ defensive line as they prepare of an upcoming game. Other episodes will include the Miami Dolphins cheerleaders, inside Green Bay’s football culture, and offer an insider’s look at the San Diego Chargers organisation.
The VR content will be free, with the first episode on 24th November (Thanksgiving) on the NFL’s YouTube channel. Later this year, episodes will also be available on the NFL VR app, designed for Daydream View.
Vishal Shah, NFL, senior vice president of digital media said: “Virtual reality is an emerging platform that enables content experiences with a truly unique vantage point that brings fans closer to the game.
“We want to get better acquainted with the technology, the platform, the content we can actually create… and how our fans are engaging in the content and viewing it.”
