Nike is set to take over from Umbro as a partner of Manchester City after the club announced last week that Nike Inc., which owns both companies, is to switch brands. Umbro has sponsored the Premier League leaders, favourites for the title after a 2-0 win over Champions League chasers Newcastle United, since June 2009 and will continue in the same role until the end of the 2012/13 season.
Nike’s new contract will run from 2013 until 2019.
The deal covers the design, manufacture and distribution of Manchester City’s kit, training wear and related products.
Nike Brand president, Charlie Denson said: ‘We’re excited by the opportunity to further develop the relationship between City and Nike Inc, which builds on the successful partnership the club has already enjoyed with Umbro, and reflects both the ambitions of the club and the Nike brand’s position within the world of football.’
John McBeath, in the chief executive role at Manchester City on a temporary basis, added: ‘Nike’s deserved reputation as the leading global sports brand, its unparalleled R&D capacity, leading global retail distribution networks and award winning marketing capabilities mean that this is a very important step forward in the evolution of Manchester City.’
City currently lead the Premier League on goal difference with just one game to go, with a win over relegation-battling QPR on the final day of the season almost certain to clinch a first Premier League title.
