World Rugby, the global governing body of rugby union, has hired digital consultancy firm Omnigon to advise on and develop the official app of this year’s Rugby World Cup in England.
The app will include news, team and tournament information, ticket details and social media elements.
Omnigon was the only non-European bidder for the contract and was selected by a committee comprising World Rugby, England 2015 organisers and IMG.
The New York-based company has reportedly been working on the project for some time, with the first phase app already available, and two more phases – as well as a tablet version – to be completed by the time the tournament begins on 18th September.
David Nugent, Omnigon’s chief commercial officer, said: “Omnigon is extremely proud to have signed World Rugby, among the formidable international competition, to develop the official app for this historical moment in the sport of Rugby.”
“This exemplifies our commitment to the United Kingdom and international marketplace as we continue to aggressively build our European presence.
“As the Rugby World Cup unites tens of millions of fans throughout the world, we look forward to helping World Rugby increase engagement during the sport’s biggest event.”
Omnigon has also confirmed the appointment of Phil Sharpe as senior vice president of client strategy and engagement.
