The dramatic final round of this year’s Open Championship proved a ratings
winner for BBC with a peak audience of 5.7m viewers tuning in to the coverage.
BBC One won a 28.7% share of the total TV audience during the peak which
occurred at 7.15pm as winner Padraig Harrington began a four-hole play-off
against Sergio Garcia.
The figure was up significantly on last year’s Championship peak of 4.8m
viewers.
Average audience for the final day of the Open Championship was 3.8m (a share
of 25.8%) between 2.30pm-8pm on BBC One, and 1.3m (13.7% share) between
11.00am-2.30pm on BBC Two.
During the four day Championship, BBC Sport’s TV coverage reached an audience
of 14.1m viewers – nearly 1m up on last year.
