Welsh rugby union side Ospreys have appointed former City Football Group Director of Partnerships Nick Garcia as their new CEO.

The club’s new owner, Y11 Sports & Media, has called the appointment a ‘bold statement of intent’ of its ambition to become a global sporting brand.

Garcia was part of the team that led the formation of City Football Group, gaining a remit across Manchester, New York, Melbourne and Yokohama as the organisation increased its reach. He most recently served as Group CEO of Al Jazira Sports and Culture Club in Abu Dhabi.

He will be responsible for all areas of the Ospreys business and will report to the Board. He and his family will move to Swansea to start work on April 12th.

Meanwhile, Ospreys say the appointment will see current Managing Director, Andrew Millward, move to Chief Operating Officer and be charged with leading the club’s rugby strategy.

“The Ospreys is a pillar of Welsh rugby and the community, with an impressive history of success and a reputation of innovating to deliver results,” said Garcia.

“The ownership’s vision for the club and the changing rugby landscape makes this an exciting role. I’m truly honoured to have been chosen to lead the Ospreys in this next phase.”

James Davies-Yandle, Ospreys and Y11 Sports & Media owner, added: “Nick has a proven track record at the highest level in professional sport and has built an impressive reputation for innovation as an executive within elite sport.

“This appointment is part of Y11’s strategy to place the Ospreys at the cutting edge of professional sport, while still respecting the rich history and culture that made it a success.

“Professional rugby faces many challenges due to the coronavirus pandemic and we believe we have appointed a CEO who is innovative and equipped to navigate the challenges ahead.”
