OZ Sports has launched a new Online Training Portal for video assistant referees (VARs) in leagues around the world using the system.

The platform sits alongside OZ Sports’ VAR Solution, which is one of the first programmes in the world to be inspected under FIFA’s Quality Programme for VAR Technology.

The Online Training Portal aims to transform training for those referees using VAR, particularly during the coronavirus lockdown, while also addressing the complexities and costs of existing VAR training approaches, providing an online environment to go with on-site training when the period of social distancing ends.

“By transforming the key challenge of referee training, we are able to simplify the adoption of VAR by leagues around the world,” said Gudjon Gudjonsson, CEO, OZ Sports.

“With our VAR Online Training Portal, referees can train anytime, even from their homes, in a rich interactive environment, making the process simple, efficient and effective, even under the current lockdown.”

OZ Sports says the new portal has the ability to revolutionise the implementation of VAR across the footballing landscape. Until now, the system is limited to the top leagues and competitions, but the company says its pay-as-you-go service removes barriers to adoption at all levels of football by harnessing technology and changing the economics of implementation by reducing costs and the need for capital outlay.
