Malaysian state oil and gas firm Petronas has signed a multi-year extension to its title sponsorship of Formula One champions Mercedes.
“There is a renewed vitality and a new level of energy in the sport this year,” Petronas president Datuk Wan Zulkiflee Wan Ariffin said. “With new rules and regulations for this year, and many new things for the fans, the sport is increasing in terms of audience and that’s great. And for all of us at Petronas, we know that the technical contribution will be even more important this year because of the stiff competition from our rivals.”
The deal was signed at the end of last year but kept under wraps by both parties until this week.
The latest deal extends Petronas’ time as the title sponsor of Mercedes Formula One team since the German manufacturer returned to the sport in 2010.
Mercedes AMG Petronas – shortlisted for Brand of the Year in association with Pinsent Masons at the BT Sport Industry Awards 2017 – currently sits top of the constructors championship, with driver Lewis Hamilton closing the gap at the top of the drivers’ championship after a record-equalling fifth victory at Silverstone last weekend.
