The Professional Footballers’ Association has revealed that its former deputy chief executive Mick McGuire was sacked after allegations of bullying.

McGuire left the PFA last week amid reports of a breakdown in relations with chief executive Gordon Taylor.

However Taylor said in a statement: ‘I regrettably had no alternative but to summarily dismiss Mick McGuire for gross professional misconduct.

‘As a trade union the PFA can’t condone bullying, nor allow it to continue.’

McGuire, who was appointed to his role in January 2007 after more than 20 years with the PFA, refused to comment on the matter.

His playing career lasted 16 years and took in spells with Coventry, Norwich, Barnsley and Oldham.
