Jockey Club Racecourses, the largest racecourse group in the UK, has unveiled ‘The Jockey Club Grassroots Flat Series’; a six-month series of races aimed at supporting the foundation levels of Britain’s second biggest spectator sport.
Beginning at Nottingham Racecourse next Friday, the Series will consist of 38 races split into two distance categories – Sprint and Middle Distance. Run exclusively at nine of The Jockey Club courses, it will climax with two £25,000 finals at Warwick Racecourse on Thursday 3rd October 2013.
To be entitled to enter into the final a horse simply needs to compete in at least one of the corresponding qualifiers. These will be annotated as ‘The Jockey Club Grassroots Series Qualifiers’ after the race title.
The initiative follows on from the highly successful Grassroots Jump Series launched at Jockey Club Racecourses for the 2012/2013 Jumps season, which culminated in March at Haydock Park Racecourse.
Paul Fisher, group managing director, Jockey Club Racecourses, said: ‘Supporting the foundation levels of British racing is really important to us. After announcing a record contribution to prize money from our own resources for 2013, funding initiatives such as The Jockey Club Grassroots Series is further demonstration of our commitment to support quality, including midweek, at all levels of the sport.’
‘With £50,000 available at the climax of The Jockey Club Grassroots Series, we’re hopeful owners and trainers will welcome the opportunity and get behind the initiative, while supporting the racecourse group investing the most into British racing.’
