Platini Confirms Fifa President Candidacy

UEFA president Michel Platini has confirmed he will stand as a candidate to be the next president of football’s governing body, FIFA.

Speaking at the announcement, the 60 year old claimed that FIFA needs to “turn over a new leaf” with a new president, with  polling for the election to take place on 26th February next year.

According to media reports, Platini has received indications of support from four continental confederations.

Candidates have until 26th October to be nominated for the 2016 vote, after current president Sepp Blatter confirmed he was standing down. Blatter has been in charge of the governing body since 1998.

The election will be held in Zurich at an emergency congress attended by the Fifa member associations.
