Leading social sports app PlayUp will broadcast live coverage of the Extreme Sailing Series this week, and says the content ‘marks the beginning of a raft of UK announcements.’

The Elite Level Extreme Sailing Series pits some of the best professional sailing teams in the world against each other on identical Extreme 40 catamarans, on challenging, tactical courses, close to shore to provide stadium-style entertainment.

Live streams of the races, which take place in Brazil this week, will be available through PlayUp – the first time live sailing will be available on the platform globally.

‘Mobile and social media continue to change the way the world engages with sport – and PlayUp is at the forefront of making sport a truly social experience for fans,’ said Sophie Neary, CEO Europe of PlayUp. ‘The PlayUp real-time mobile platform provides an unprecedented opportunity for brands to access and engage with sports fans in a way that has never been possible until now.

‘I’m incredibly excited that we are offering sailing fans the opportunity to interact with their friends and access expert views on the Extreme Sailing Series – without missing a second of the live action. Sailing is hugely under-commercialised in the UK and globally even though there is a significant public appetite for it.’

Play-Up provides the capability for leagues, rights holders, content owners, or any other individuals to create, publish and sell content globally, generating revenue on a per-view basis. Content can be pay-for or free to access depending on wishes of the rights holder.

Globally, PlayUp shows more than 50,000 live sporting events each year – a number set to grow to 250,000 – including football, cricket, rugby, horseracing, sailing, boxing, basketball, and motorsport. It has more than seven million monthly active users globally.
