After a much drawn out investigation, Portsmouth has been fined £15,000 for being connected to the signing and then selling of striker Mwaruwari Benjani.
Benjani joined the club from Auxerre in 2006 for what was a record fee at the time of £4.1m, and then was sold to Manchester City in January of this year.
In a breach of FA rules, agent Willie McKay reportedly represented Auxerre in the deal with Portsmouth and then represented the selling club in the Zimbabwe player’s transfer to Man City.
Along with Portsmouth receiving a fine, McKay has been given a suspended ban, as the FA requires that agents cannot act in two different clubs in two consecutive transactions with the same player.
A spokesperson for Portsmouth, however, has claimed that the club did not know McKay was representing Auxerre.
Portsmouth will receive an additional £15,000 fine and McKay will be issued permanent suspension from all transfers if either party breaches the FA agent regulations again.
