Manchester United has announced a three-year regional sponsorship deal with Apollo Tyres, which will see the tyre manufacturing company become the club’s official tyre partner in the UK and India.
The Barclays Premier League champions and the India-based brand will focus on a joint commitment to the community, which is designed to promote a healthy, active lifestyle to children.
Apollo will build ‘Go The Distance’ football pitches for local communities in the UK and India, which will be constructed from recycled tyres.
These ‘play zones’, the first of which is located at Old Trafford as part of a fan zone, will feature skills challenges which will encourage users to improve their control, speed and tricks.
First team players Ryan Giggs, Rio Ferdinand and Jonny Evans were joined at the launch event on Wednesday by students and staff from the Burnage Media Arts College – a partner school of the Manchester United Foundation.
Richard Arnold, the managing director of the Manchester United Group, said: ‘Apollo Tyres is a leading player in the tyre industry and its rate of growth and development into new territories made it an attractive partner for the club.’
‘With a combined fan base close to 46 million followers in both the UK and India, we are confident in providing Apollo with a highly engaging audience, not only to promote its brand, but also to engage and communicate with our fans.’
‘This partnership also allows the club to continue its on-going commitment to investment in and the development of young people, whether through our academy or via the work we do in the community.’
Onkar Kanwar, the chairman of Apollo Tyres, added: ‘This is a very significant partnership for us as a company and clearly demonstrates our global ambitions for our business, and the brand. Very few sports platforms deliver such global profile and awareness and we look forward to working closely with Manchester United over the coming years.’
