Some of the football clubs whose scheduled matches were postponed at the weekend have donated their unneeded matchday food supplies to foodbanks.
Everton, who were due to play local rivals Liverpool on Monday night at Goodison Park, have delivered 635kg of food, including 136 litres of milk, 65 litres of cream and 360 eggs to North Liverpool Foodbank. Newcastle United have also donated food including 1,200 pies and a range of cold meats to the Newcastle West End Foodbank.
Jo Wetherill, Catering Services Director, Sodexo, told Everton’s official website: “Our first thought on learning the match wouldn’t be going ahead was of how we could use food which would otherwise go to waste.
“This is an uncertain and difficult time for everyone, but these unique circumstances have enabled us to provide food for some of the people who need it most.
“We hope this donation will enable something positive to emerge from the game being cancelled and give valuable assistance to an essential charity which acts as a lifeline for members of its community.”
Carole Rowland from Newcastle West End Foodbank said: “Naturally, along with thousands of fans, we were bitterly disappointed to learn of the postponement of matches, although we fully appreciate the reasons why.
“We would like to say a huge thanks to Newcastle United’s catering team, who have so generously offered unused food from the match.”
