The Premier League is believed to be considering a proposal to introduce a play-off for the fourth Champions League spot.
Currently the teams finishing in the top four positions are handed entry to Europe’s elite competition, but it has now been proposed that teams from fourth place to seventh should compete in a mini-knockout competition.
The proposal was raised at a meeting of all 20 clubs in February and will be considered again when they next meet in April.
The same four clubs – Liverpool, Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal – have filled the top four positions in five of the last six seasons, with only Everton breaking the trend in 2005.
However, there will be no changes for three years as the current TV deals remain in place.
